challenge
Children are often reluctant to share personal emotions and secrets with their parents, feeling a need for privacy and control over their own experiences.
To address this, we aim to create an AI coach that feels trustworthy, relatable, and emotionally supportive, providing a safe space for children while being guided by clinical expertise.
problem definition
To understand how to make AI coaches feel more like friendly, supportive companions, I examined existing designs and identified key user expectations:
Key Questions
What do users expect from their interaction with an AI coach?
How can we highlight a coach’s personality and expertise simultaneously?
→ A coach that feels
trustworthy
engaging
relatable
impact
Users like to talk with friend-like AI coach who has shared interests and emotionally support them at the same time.
Increased Engagement
Users showed more interest in chatting with coaches who felt like friends.
Enhanced User Trust
Relatable, friendly AI coaches helped users feel emotionally supported.
Business Value
By boosting engagement, the friend-like AI coaches increased user retention and business value.
superpowers
How to make mental wellness support more approachable & accessible yet stay professional?
Engage users through interests and expertises
Inspired by video games and dating apps, I designed the interface to integrate coaches’ interests and characteristics and expertises, creating a fun and engaging experience tailored to young users.
Bring AI coaches to life
Each coach profile highlights relatable qualities and shared interests. Thoughtful visuals and compelling copy build rapport, encouraging users to connect and reducing hesitation.
Agile drives innovative change
Framed the problem and developed a design strategy to align with project goals and user needs.
Created wireframes and UX designs, ensuring clarity and functionality in user interactions.
Conducted internal testing with the design team to evaluate and validate the design solution.
Refined the design through an ongoing test-iterate cycle, incorporating feedback until receiving approval for launch.
learnings
Asking questions to different stakeholders helps me understand the context of the product and clarify things when just onboarded.
Clearly defining the terms and achieving team alignment before starting the project helps avoid inconsistent understanding among team members.
Lo-fi prototypes made for internal testing before usability testing help spot many usability issues more agilely and efficiently.
Creating an agenda for meetings helps stick to the topic and respect attendees’ time.
Avoiding jargon while communicating with stakeholders shows empathy as a designer.
